Preparing a Thanksgiving meal can be time consuming, challenging and expensive. Ever wonder how your Thanksgiving Day expense breaks down or how it compares to other parts of the country?

Grocery stores are audited every year by the American Farm Bureau Federation.
to help learn the true cost of a Thanksgiving meal around the United States. For 2014-a Thanksgiving meal for 10 people cost on average $49.41.

Charlottesville, VA was ranked as 103 averaging around $49.56. Hilo, Hawaii was the most expensive place to host a Thanksgiving meal, costing on average $79.11. The least expensive place was Waco, TX at $39.82. The food that is included in this survey included the turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, rolls with butter, peas, cranberries, a tray of carrots and celery, pumpkin pie with whipped cream and coffee. Everyone’s Thanksgiving meal is different- consisting of different foods. Keep in mind- adding decorations, wine and beer and more side dishes will increase the cost.

Hosting dinner can get expensive so here are some tips to help:
1. Shop around on the prices of the turkey. Watch the store flyers for sales.
2. Plan ahead with your shopping. Buy canned goods or boxed items when they are on sale, even if its weeks ahead of time.
3. Everyone likes to contribute to the meal- so have different guests bring different side dishes, if they offer.
4. Don’t throw away leftovers. Save those leftovers to make turkey soup, sandwiches or maybe even another turkey dinner the next day.

Thanksgiving is a perfect holiday to celebrate with friends and family- so laugh, cook and share good memories over the dinner table!
