Charlottesville Residents Among Thinnest

Charlottesville VA Residents Among ThinnestOn one hand this seems like good news.  But on the other hand it makes me squeamish for some reason.

According to a recent Gallup Healthways Wellbeing Index poll, Charlottesville ranked as the 3rd best city in the U.S. for thin people vs. obese people.  It bothers me to even report this, because I have personal misgivings about the criteria for “obese” and how the term is applied across age/gender/ethnic groups.  Am I the only one who thinks that statistics should not be used to award winners and losers for cities, like a competitive beauty pageant?  Does it make us more attractive to ourselves or others  – overall – if we are deemed “thin” by some outside source?  Yes I recognize the health benefits of proper weight and exercise and diet, and I understand that there are enormous costs associated with obesity, both financial and personal costs.

Still… if for instance we were to win (or lose) some poll that measured friendliness… would it matter how we compare to other friendly towns?   Are subjective comparisons and rankings really meaningful?

Anyway, here’s to you C’ville.   You’re thin.   Clink. (diet drink)    Charlottesville 3rd Thinnest Town
