Charlottesville Groundbreaking at Hydraulic Rd. Shops

by staff on May 11, 2011

Shops At Stonefield Charlottesville VAApparently the construction of the mixed use development at the corner of Hydraulic Rd. and Rt. 29N seems finally about to begin.

Groundbreaking has begun on the project which was once known as Albemarle Place … and is now called The Shops at Stonefield.  It’s taken nearly 4 years to reach this point.

The land is approximately 65 acres in the heart of the commercial district of Rt.29 North, abutting the border of Charlottesville and Albemarle County.   At this time much of the land is vacant (a former 7-11 store was on the corner, see photo).  This first phase will produce 270,000 sq.ft. of commercial and retail space.  a 12,500-square-foot Trader Joe’s grocery store, a 135-room hotel plus … 245 multi-family residential living units.  One of the anchors for the first phase will be a 14-screen 65,000 sq.ft. Regal Cinema.

We’ll keep you posted as construction progresses.  This is a very busy intersection and it will be interesting to see how the project impacts local activity.
