Nelson County Secrets….

by Gayle on November 15, 2010

When taking clients to lunch a few weeks ago after closing on their new farm in Nelson County, they remarked as we left the local Italian restaurant that places like that (Vito’s) are ones that they need to know about since they are moving into the area. That prompted this post.

Thai Restaurant in Nelson County, VirginiaSecret 1. Nelson County has one of the best Thai Restaurants (well take-out) around. On Route 56 West just a few miles off of Route 29 in Colleen is Thai Siam. You will feel like you are in the middle of nowhere! The restaurant is in an unexpected location, an old packing shed, all by itself along the stretch of highway known as Tye Brook (Rt. 56). While the owner does not have her own website, you can read reviews at Yelp! The address is:
4137 Tye Brook Hwy
Arrington, VA 22922-2345
(434) 263-7938

Saunders Nursery, Saunders Brothers, Nursery in Nelson County, VirginiaSecret 2: A little further down the road (Rt. 56 west) from Thai Siam there is a large family owned nursery, Saunders Brothers. They are a commercial operation that sells to the major retailers, but throughout the summer and fall they open their doors to sell to the public. Be prepared to come early because it gets crowded and sometimes they run out of items. If you are getting ready for a major landscaping project, plan to visit. In addition to the nursery operation, they grow apples and peaches as well as some vegetables and offer all of these for sale in season.

Rapunzels Coffee House in Lovingston VirginiaSecret 3: Nelson County used to be a major peach and apple producing area and almost every orchard had a packing house. You can find these beautiful barns scattered throughout the county and put to new and creative uses such as Thai Siam did. In Lovingston, the old packing shed serves as home to Rapunzels, an eclectic arts venue/coffee shop. Stop by on a Friday night and you’ll see where everyone in the county goes for entertainment and socializing.

Lovingston Italian Restaurant ---Great pizza!Secret 4: The Italian restaurant that I mentioned earlier, Vito’s, is in a non-descript building along Route 29 just south of Lovingston. While it appears to be like any other country diner, the food will be some of the best Italian you can find anywhere. They have fantastic pizzas too!   If you go on a Sunday, you are sure to find a line waiting to get in—and this is in the country!! Vito’s just opened a second restaurant in Nellysford.

Nelson County Virginia Ice CreamSecret 5: The Colleen Drive-in has the big ice cream cone directing you in off of Route 29 just south of Lovingston. It offers a variety of soft-serve ice cream cones, milk shakes and sundaes, but the bannana split will be the best you have ever had and you won’t want to share!
